On 11 December, two innovative demonstrators in the field of network technologies were presented at the Werner-von-Siemens Center for Industry and Science. The 5G-COMPASS project team has developed two exciting use cases for the convergent access network in our industrial hall:
- The first use case deals with the teleoperation of forklift trucks. In a narrow high-bay warehouse area, a forklift truck is teleoperated to move pallets. An operator can control several vehicles from a teleworking station using cameras and lidar. These sensors provide the necessary data to obtain a detailed overview of the vehicle and its surroundings. We use light communication to provide the necessary wireless network capacity. This use case is being realised by Teraki GmbH.
- The second use case deals with autonomous mobile robots. When operating a fleet of autonomous mobile robots, challenges arise in busy intersection areas. The robots are controlled by an external fleet management system, but congestion can occur in critical areas, requiring additional coordination. Certain robots can be prioritised for important operations. To ensure the high data rates required for real-time motion control, these areas are equipped with LiFi transmitters and data traffic is automatically switched from 5G to LiFi. This use case is being implemented by T-Systems International GmbH.
The LiFi technology was developed by the Heinrich Hertz Institute and made available to the project.
