About the project

What is it about

The project Dynamic Adaptation of 5G Campus Networks and Applications in Industrial Application Scenarios investigates how users can dynamically control certain performance parameters of the 5G mobile network, such as the data rate, depending on the application. The implications for performance improvements and innovations on both the user and provider side are analysed, as well as overall societal effects (sustainability, civil security).

Aims of the research project

The concrete added value of 5G campus networks based on an open radio access network (OpenRAN) is to be evaluated and demonstrated through the exemplary realisation of three industrial application scenarios. The topic areas of the scenarios are autonomous mobile robotics, resource efficiency of production facilities and civil security of production facilities.

Motivation

The OpenRAN approach with open, standardised interfaces offers the potential for a restructuring of communication systems or the creation of a market for new communication solutions and thus to the same extent for their applications. In contrast to the public mobile radio networks that exist today, this means that all network components (hardware and software) no longer have to be from one manufacturer. This enables time and resource savings and thus a high level of acceptance for campus networks and their applications.

The three application scenarios also show the broad application possibilities of using dynamic network parameters and the potential for significant unique selling points. In addition, the project results should also contribute to the consideration of perspective regulatory requirements for network operators, in that the campus networks should actively support the management of damage events.

By setting up a test field at the Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science at the Siemensstadt site in Berlin, we are promoting the emergence of an ecosystem on 5G campus networks and the exchange with industry and other research projects.

The Team

Partner CampusDynA

In the CampusDynA project, partners from industry and science work together on scenarios that are tested and set up as demonstrators at the Werner-von-Siemens Centre for Industry and Science e.V..

In the third year of the project, public demonstrations are planned at the WvSC.

The CampusDynA project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection in the Campus Networks programme based on 5G  communication technology as a satellite to the CampusOS flagship project for providers and users.
